Understanding Money In and Money Out

Learn how Money In (income) and Money Out (expenses) work together to give you a clear picture of your cash flow.

Smart Pocket organizes your cash flow into two simple streams: Money In (money received) and Money Out (money spent).

What this feature helps you do

  • Money In (Income / Receipts): Any money entering your accounts. Examples include salary, freelance income, business revenue, cash gifts, investment dividends, or refunds.

  • Money Out (Expenses / Payments): Any money leaving your possession. Examples include rent, groceries, school fees, dining, fuel, maintenance, and shopping.

  • Clear Cash Flow: Comparing your total Money In against Money Out shows you whether you are building savings or spending beyond your income.

How to record transactions manually

  1. Tap the green + Money In or red ↑ Money Out button on your Dashboard or navigation bar.

  2. Enter the Amount (e.g., AED 250).

  3. Select the Account (e.g., Bank, Cash, or a custom credit card).

  4. Choose a Category (e.g., Groceries, Utilities, Salary).

  5. (Optional) Add a Tag (e.g., #FamilyEvent), attach a receipt image, or type a note.

  6. Tap Save Transaction.

Practical Examples

  • Receiving Salary (Money In): On your monthly payday, you log a Money In transaction of AED 16,000 under Salary into your Bank account.

  • Paying School Fees (Money Out): You pay AED 3,800 for school tuition using your bank card. You record a Money Out transaction under Education from your Bank account.

  • Receiving a Store Refund (Money In): You return an item to a store and receive AED 120 back to your card. You record a Money In transaction under the original category (Shopping) to keep your net spending accurate.

Helpful Tips

  • Internal transfers are not expenses: If you withdraw cash from an ATM, use the Transfers module, not Money Out.

  • Use notes for context: Adding a quick note like "Replaced car battery" helps when searching your history months later.
